Staff Pick Notes

Irish Turf

In the old days, Irish distilleries used to peat (called Turf in Ireland) their barley in the method we now see in Scotland. To cut costs, this process was stopped; with Connemara we see a resurrection of this once dead Irish art form. This will throw anyone off in a blind tasting because people just assume it’s Scottish. Incorrect. This “turfed” expression can trifle with the best of the best in Scotland, not forgetting the Irish are the inventors of whiskey. The final result is actually crisper and cleaner than Islay whiskies, because there are no oily, iodine characteristics. Perfectly distilled by Cooley, the nose is sweet and seemingly sherried. On the palate, there are flavors of smoke and cinnamon from the Irish turf. The finish is elegant and warming. Come winter, give it a bash. You won’t be disappointed.
