Staff Pick Notes

I still can’t get over how much wine you get for your money with this one. Deep garnet in color with mesmerizing aromas of cherry, ripe plum, spearmint, strawberry compote and toasted oak let you know immediately it’s going to be an absolute stunner. Ripe Bing cherry with hints of exotic spices and underlying earth tones are framed by mouth-watering acidity on a silky palate. The finish shows exquisite minerality and is long and satisfying. Benito Dusi’s Ranch is the only zinfandel vineyard that Ridge sources from within the Central Coast Viticultural Area, and this wine shows the exotic spice typical of the vineyard and the freshness of firm acidity. Fifteen months in oak has brought these elements into balance. We don’t talk much about wine magazine ratings here, but if you google this wine, you'll see the reviews are off the charts.

Zinfandel is widely thought of as “America’s grape,” but in fact the variety is of Croatian origin, and is genetically extremely similar to Italian Primitivo, which thrives in the warmest parts of southern Italy. Like Primitivo, Zinfandel requires warm but not hot growing conditions, as its skins are relatively thin: this can cause its berries to shrivel into raisins if left on the vine a little too long. Dry and well-drained terroirs are also preferable for Zinfandel, as its bunches are...
