Farming varieties like Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc in Santa Barbara County may not seem to make sense, but the cool nights and long growing season on the Central Coast of California are ideal for these grapes. Luckily, Jim Clendenen saw the potential. Part hippie, part renegade, part winemaking genius, he approached the craft through a Burgundian lens, but was not afraid to create uniquely American wines. Some of the best examples of aged American wines I've tasted were made by him. If you have patience and proper storage, buy at least three bottles of this white blend. Your taste buds will be rewarded immediately, but your palate will be blown away over time. Currently this is full of green apple, crisp pear, and white floral undertones. Great acidity and structure are additional hallmarks that also support bottle age.
