Lovely raspberry aromas and dry, earthy aromatics greet the nose, followed by a moderate dose of oak. This medium-bodied Zin shows good acidity and tannins that are supportive yet unobtrusive. It has succulent, intense strawberry fruit on the palate, and a finish that is a touch compressed at the moment. Lingering earth and light toast notes frame the brambly fruit. This is an exceptionally civilized California Zinfandel.

California Zinfandel has an image problem. Over-the-top styles that were popular in decades past are not in vogue and a new revival hasn't taken off since. Despite this it is worth noting that Zinfandel has some real history in this state. Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley is one of the top regions, and for good reason. Centuries-old vines dot the landscape with thick, gnarled branches. They have held steady through decades of intensely dry, sunny days and chilly, humid nights. This is precisely where Nalle's Zinfandel comes from. It marries a rustic character with poise and beauty. The palate hits on classic fruity notes like plum, raspberry, pomegranate, and allspice, or what the staff at Nalle describes as "Dry Creek sunshine in a bottle." A finely grained textured and bright acidity give it a nice lift. Pair this with blue cheese burgers.
