This long running family distillery located on the western side of the country has pivoted to producing organic rums from local heirloom cane varieties. As you can imagine, the flavors are completely singular is the best ways. A still rare occurrence of 100% pot distilled fresh cane juice rum - this expression was aged for one year in Ghana before being finished for three additional years in Europe by the expert team at Velier. With notes of jasmine tea, passion fruit, vanilla and spices this is pure unbridled fun to drink. Only 219 bottles total for this USA exclusive. Rum connoisseurs have a reputation as people who are, to put it mildly, difficult to please. Thankfully for true obsessives, PM spirits has delivered something to get heads spinning with its Flag Series release, a collection highlighting rare bottlings of aged rums from across the globe. The Ghana cuvee, the first one that Astor has carried, hails from a family-owned distillery in the western Ahafo region. The rum is made from cane juice that’s distilled in pots before undergoing one year of tropical aging and three years of continental aging in European & American oak, giving it a unique mix of tropical fruit and toast notes. Aromas of green banana, pineapple, and honeysuckle, give way to a palate that’s both vegetal and sweet with a long, spicy, and slightly saline finish. Something that even obsessives will happily nod along to.
