Chichibu Ichiro's Malt US Edition 2025 Single Malt Japanese Whisky

All heritage brands struggle to balance tradition and innovation, but few manage to do it as well as Chichibu. The Chichibu Distillery, which is approaching its 20th anniversary but has roots dating to the post-WWII period, has become iconic by merging traditional Scotch distillation with a shokunin, or “craftsman,” mindset toward innovation. This hybrid approach is on full display in the 2025 release of the US edition of Ichiro’s Malt, which is distilled from lightly peated malted barley that’s aged 5–9 years in a combination of 16 barrels (!!!) including ex-IPA casks, ex-imperial stout casks, and ex-bourbon casks. The result is unique and delicious in equal measure: aromas of red apple, candied orange, and Tahitian vanilla give way to a floral, slightly sweet palate with a touch of hoppy bitterness at the end. One dram is barely enough.
