A master of extra old calvados, the magic conjured by this family run estate is reflected in the deeply complex flavors worthy of a noble brandy that achieve levels of finesse that this region very rarely sees. We hand picked this expression from a single cask at our annual spring visit tasting out of barrel at the historic domaine with the 7th and current generation and dear friend of Astor, Jean-François Guillouet. Distilled in 2007 and aged in a single cask in one of the estate's more humid cellars, after17yrs the brandy has settled into a concentrated yet splendidly mellow profile with an unexpected explosion of ripe tropical fruits, complex multi-dimensional spice notes including a dazzlingly and otherworldly finish laden with cardamom and saffron. Very limited.

What an incredible find! The magic of these single cask Astor Barrel Calvados bottlings never cease to amaze me.This time we take a trip to Normandy to meet with 7th generation Calvados producer Jean-François Guillouet, who oversees the production of Michel Huard Calvados. This domaine is regarded as the most admired in AOC Calvados, which uses only apples (no pears here) that are single distilled. Around 20 varieties of apples are planted here, and the Huard family has lived on the same property for 5 generations, so they definitely know a thing or two about their apples! This 17 year bottling shows an explosion of esters, spices, and caramelized fruits that is the truest example of a single barrel bottled at the perfect time & at cask strength. Jean-François is already a legend, but this legend is only growing with bottles like this!
