Bourgogne Aligoté, Patrick Hudelot - 2023

750 mL
Item # 52118

Aligoté is one of the other white grapes you will find in Burgundy and today's version has nothing to do with the light, kir-worthy, style of yesteryear. The vines range in age from 25 to 35 years old and come from soils of clay, marl and limestone. Fermented with native yeasts in tank and bottled unoaked. Fresh, vibrant and floral on the palate. Pair with smoked fish or cod croquettes.

Staff Pick Notes

White Burgundies usually bring one major grape to mind: Chardonnay. Love it or hate it, Burgundian Chard has made its mark. However, today we're talking about the underrated Aligoté! Domaine Patrick Hudelot, located in Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, has Aligoté figured out. This is a family estate, and Patrick converted to organic farming in 2000, supporting their main philosophy of producing beautiful grapes and highlighting Burgundian terroir. Tasting this bottle was a great way to welcome springtime. It is refreshing, light, and no oak makes it mouthwateringly mineral. I got notes of yellow apple, citrus, and lots of florals. It is vibrant and fresh, and so much more than an ingredient to make Kir cocktails. Thank you Patrick Hudelot for putting Aligoté on my radar, I will be reaching for this bottle again and pairing with seafood for spring!

Glossary

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Aligoté

The "other" white grape of Burgundy, Aligoté plays a struggling second fiddle to the regal white grape of the region, Chardonnay. Older Aligoté vines have been known to produce wines of high quality, displaying lovely citrusy and at times nutty characteristics - but even so, the remaining plantings of the grape are fast being uprooted to make even more space for the cultivation of Chardonnay.
