Staff Pick Notes

Whether you’re a returning fan or a newcomer to cabernet franc, this expression from the Manoir de la Tete Rouge winery (certified organic and biodynamic) in the Loire Valley will captivate you! The grapes for this 100% cabernet franc wine are destemmed and the winemakers use indigenous yeasts to kickstart the fermentation process. Moreover, the wine is aged for nine months in a concrete tank after which point is is filtered and unfined. In essence, this is a cabernet franc that offers great purity of fruit on both the nose and palate. Notes of raspberry, red plum, red cherry, red currant, violets, and graphite harmonize in all the right ways. Both the acidity and tannins are balanced and moderate, lending structure to the wine, so feel free to cellar this one away for a few years if you’re looking to develop this wine further!

More About This Wine

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Excavations left from building castles and palaces resulted in a network of hundreds of miles of underground tunnels, which local vintners have taken advantage of as ready-made wine cellars! ...

Cabernet Franc

Relegated to moderate obscurity in modern times, Cabernet Franc is in fact the proud parent of the attention-hogging Cabernet Sauvignon (after an illicit affair with Sauvignon Blanc a hundred-odd years ago). Cabernet Franc has remained close to its roots in France, enjoying small pockets of popularity primarily in the Loire Valley (specifically in Chinon), where it is often bottled as a varietal wine, and in Bordeaux where it is still used in moderate percentages in the typical blends. In fact,...
