Matthiasson Merlot, Napa - 2021

750 mL
Item # 51801

The wines of Steve and Jill Matthiasson always stand out from other wines in Napa Vallley. A newcomer, circa 2003, their focus wasn't on trend or bombastic so it's no wonder they're thriving decades later. This bottle of Merlot is a nod to making what's old new again. Fresh and delicious.

Staff Pick Notes

Merlot gets a bad wrap. For anyone who’s grown up (or at least been introduced to wine) in the post-Sideways era, you’ve likely seen people turn their noses up at Merlot in favor of heartier Cabernet Sauvignon or prettier Pinot Noir. Thankfully, Matthiasson Merlot - 2021 is here to flip the script. Founder Steve Matthiasson is wine purist: he started his namesake winery in 2003 with the goal of delivering classic, balanced California expressions of old world varieties. His Merlot, made from fruit harvested on two Napa vineyards and rested for 20 months in a mix of new French oak and neutral oak, is exactly as promised: textbook right-bank Bordeaux, with a California twist. Aromas of red cherry and wild berries give way to a juicy, earthy, and savory palate with notes of red and black fruit. Perfect for roasts and roasting Merlot-haters.

More About This Wine

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

It has one of the most impressive and distinctive textures of any wine, and has long been prized for the "softening" effect it can have on Cabernet Sauvignon - especially...
