Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

It’s easy to forget about politics when you’re enjoying a delicious glass of wine such as ‘Alisca’ from Dúzsi. But sometimes it’s the inherently political backstory of a winery that makes you appreciate the end result that much more. Legendary Hungarian winemaker Tamás Duzsi began with only 3.3 hectares of a single Hungarian varietal (Kekfrankos) that he purchased in the 90s as a result of the “Land Compensation” act, which allowed former landowning families to reclaim land that was nationalized under communism. Now Tamás and his son Tomi Jr have 40 hectares in the town of Szekszárd and create beautiful organic wines from 11 varietals including the Chardonnay and Rajnai Rizling (Riesling) that make up this orange bottle. ‘Alisca’ has refreshing notes of citrus blossom, warm spices, and apple juice.

It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
