Antique Fernet Branca Menta Liqueur

As far as origin stories go, it's hard for them to get much cooler than this one (no pun intended). Not the oldest of Italian bitters by a long stretch, this 1960s creation was however inspired by the timeless opera singer Maria Callas, who as legend would have it liked to drink classic fernet mixed with some mint to soother her throat. In her honor, Branca has made this ever since using over 30 different herbs and spices and addition of Piedmontese peppermint oil. It undergoes a 12-month maturation period in Slovenian oak vats. These circa 1970s bottles were made for the Italian market shortly after this expression was created making them even more special. In addition, in tis era the brand was still bottling at the super high 40% abv. Only 7 bottles are available.

The Branca family has been making Fernet since 1845, and it took over 100 years for the family to make any changes to the original recipe. This is the only alternative expression of the Branca line, taking the original formula and adding Piedmontese Peppermint oil and a touch of added sugar to boost up the minty characteristics in honor of a drink coined by famous opera singer Maria Callas as vocal relief post show. This 1970's bottle pours at 40%, the initial proof for the style and while liquors age much differently than wines you can immediately distinguish this gem from the current Branca Menta . Wonderful layers of cola, dark chocolate, muddled mint, and rich caramel have come together to balance the bracing character of the Aloe Ferox at the core. Grab one while you can, because if not I will!
