In 1845, William Hinton founded his rum distillery on the Island of Madeira using local sugar cane to make his best rums. 1986 saw the closing of the distillery only to be re-opened in 2006 by William Hinton heirs seeking to restore the distillery to it's former glory. I, certainly, am ecstatic that they went through with this, because of their wonderful, Madeira-based vermouth. This is a half-sweet vermouth, where the Madeira base really shines. Oxidative notes of butterscotch, roasted nuts, toffee, bruised apples aromatically fill the glass. The palate is fresh and lively, without a cloying presence. Baking spices, orange peels and a slight herbaceousness make this a perfect vermouth for on the rocks or a lovely Vermouth Cobbler.
