Plantation Astor Select 19yr Clarendon Single Cask Jamaican Rum - 2004

Item # 50956 750 mL

A true Holy Grail when it comes to rum. Finding high ester, 100% pot distilled no frills zero additive, single cask, full proof rum from Jamaica alone is a feat for rum lovers. Finding it from this iconic distiller, next to impossible. A single vintage offering tropical aged for 15yrs on the island also as rare as could be. Then add an extra 4yrs of aging in French Oak Cognac casks in France. Did we mention the bottling strength is 73.8% ?!! Needless to say you can be more than sure that there is absolutely nothing in this bottle except for some of the finest rum on planet earth. In all its funky and fruity glory. Tropical fruits are everywhere on the nose and palate but the other flavors just keep coming and coming with standout notes of almond cake, intense cocoa and mouth-watering spices. The finish seems to linger forever. Hang on to your hat!

Staff Pick Notes

Clarendon may not be the most famous of Jamaican distilleries (hello Hampden!) but they have been at it longer and their pure, undiluted output is arguably much more rare, and therefore harder to come by. 90% of Clarendon's output goes to Myers Dark Rum and Cap't Morgan, and the nominal Clarendon brand Monymusk is hard to find stateside at anything other than 40% abv. In addition, Clarendon has a clearly delineated marques system which varies from no ester column stills to high ester pot stills. Here the marque level is MMW, which is the second highest ester level. At 73.8% abv you'd expect this to blow your socks off--and it does! With pure, undiluted flavor, it's surprisingly not just total jet fuel. Oh yeah, there is some burn, but is more in the back of the throat. Mostly you get the richness of the pure distillate on the palate.
