Staff Pick Notes

After working for years as a sommelier in Budapest and France, Csaba Malatinszky founded his small winery in Hungary’s southernmost wine region, Villány, in 1997. A pioneer in the region, he planted international varieties like Cabernet Franc and went on to achieve acclaim on the world stage. His Serena Rubra has a rich perfumed nose of blackberry jam and rose. The palate is concentrated with Bing cherries, black pepper and cherry cordial. Made exclusively from free run juice from hand-picked grapes, fermentation occurred spontaneously with native yeasts. The wine was aged in partially new and partially used 500L Hungarian oak barrels. Here is an excellent opportunity to drink a Hungarian wine from an excellent vintage that’s had over a decade of bottle aging. It’s absolutely singing right now, but be sure to grab a few for the cellar.

Today, Cabernet Sauvignon has a...
