Staff Pick Notes

Francois Pinon took over his father's estate in 1987 and it has steadily became a household name in the Loire Valley. Committed to keeping the typicity of both the appellation and the vintage, he made this a family affair when his son, Julien Pinon arrived cementing the family's dedication to organic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking. The "Buvez du Bon Pinon" is an homage to his great-grandfather, Camille, who planted the vines for Bon Pinon in 1945. The vines were planted on 3.7 hectares of Silex Noir or "Black Flint" which contributes to the wines racy acidity. A touch of residual sugar is left just to give the wine balance. Aromas of white peach, underripe pineapple, quince, almond and wet stone conclude with a palate that is dense with stone fruit, anise and a strong mineral backbone. A strong candidate for cellaring!

These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
