Païen is the Swiss name for Savagnin, and unlike its neighbors in Jura, this is not vinified oxidatively. This dry white exhibits aromas of quince, peach, bitter almond, and herbs. Romain Papilloud is the third generation of his family to carefully tend vines here in the Valais. Pair with tomato fondue with potatoes.

One rarely thinks of Swiss wines as a value alternative to anything, but with the increased demand for Jura’s small yield driving up its prices this excellent bottle is now our lowest priced 100% Savagnin! The Swiss call it Païen, but this Rosenthal import shows all the delicate intensity of a good Jura Savagnin Ouillé: fresh almond, citrus peel, and un-ripe pears. The difference? It sounds fanciful, but there’s a touch of sharp mountain herbs and alpine conifers.
