Staff Pick Notes

James Jelks selected the Grenache for this expression with the intention of making a light, quaffable red that zips across the palate with kinetic energy and electric acidity. It was all sourced on the early side while the grapes' sugars were lower. The fruit went into a traditional open-top French oak cuve, 50% whole cluster and 50% destemmed, before resting in-barrel for six months sur lie, racking once before bottling. The result is a wine brimming with lively vivacious acidity and flavors of tart watermelon, cherry limeade, raspberry bramble, and the sour straws from the candy store. Endlessly refreshing with a light chill applied, this will add a spark that will liven up any party or picnic affair.

More About This Wine

Grenache

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Flor

Flor is a protective layer of naturally occurring yeast that grows, under certain circumstances, in the barrels after fortification. Its presence (or absence) is what determines the style of a given Sherry. When it does grow, it protects the wine from oxidation while feasting on the available glycerin - the resultant Sherries are thus dry and very pale in color (called Finos or Manzanillas). Sometimes the layer forms early on, but then falls into the wine and disintegrates - these Sherries thus...
