Beaujolais "Kes Ki Dit", Coquelet - 2020

750 mL
Item # 46890

A red wine made by using whole-cluster bunches of Gamay grapes which underwent a semi-carbonic maceration for over a week. After, the fruit is pressed, fermented and then aged in concrete tanks. Damien's first vintage was at age 20. His step-father, Georges Descombes, has guided him well.

Staff Pick Notes

Although just in his mid 30s, Damien Coquelet is a seasoned pro at making wine. As the stepson of star vigneron Georges Decombes, Coquelet has been working the vineyard and cellar under his stepdad's tutelage since the age of 10. He bottled his first harvest in 2007 at the age of 20. As with most of the important wineries in Beaujolais, Coquelet grows organically with little intervention in the winemaking. I was very pleasantly surprised by the character of this $20 entry-level Coquelet. The wine shows a lovely deep garnet complexion. Flavors of tart cherries and white tea delight the nose and palate. Texture is silky and lithe. Serve this with a slight chill for warm weather quaffing. Nice with fried artichokes and aioli. I can't wait to dip into his other crus (namely the Old Vine Morgon Cote du Py).

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
