Staff Pick Notes

In the world of Portuguese winemaking, few people loom as large as Luis Pato. The Pato family has been making wine on their estate in Bairrada, located in the heart of the renown coastal Beira DOC, since the 18th century. Luis inherited the estate from his father in the early 1980s and has spent much of his career mastering Baga, often described as the Portuguese Nebbiolo. The Velhas Tinto, Luis Pato - 2000, a library release made entirely from Baga vines that are over 60 years old, is a masterful representation of both the variety and winemaker. Aromas of ripe figs and licorice give way to a rich, slightly spicy palate with dense tannins and a beautifully long finish. A true taste of winemaking history.
