Neta Astor Batch Ensamble Mezcal - 2021

The second in a trilogy of mezcal batches we selected with Neta, this very special spirit was produced by Primitivo Vásquez Vásquez from an ensamble that as far as we know is the first of its kind. Composed of equal parts Madrecuixe, Mexicano Verde and the extremely rare Penca Larga - a plant virtually unknown to the region until 2019 and thought to be agave as recently as the production of this batch in April 2021. It is in fact not an agave but a Furcraea, reminicent of karwinskii with a high potency of saponins and its own completely unique qualities. All of the plants were co-cooked, co-fermented and co-distilled yielding one of the most expressive, most beautiful and most interesting spirits we have ever tried. A mix of heady florals, herbs that are bursting with sweetness, tropical fruits and a streak of minerals and spices on the long finish. Only 72 bottles were produced for this absolutely precious and spectacular spirit.
