Staff Pick Notes

When many people think of riesling, they expect something light, maybe a little sweet, and not particularly distinctive. These people haven’t had the wines of Eva Fricke, the founder the eponymous Weingut Fricke in the heart of the Rheingau. Rather than emulating winemakers in more commercially successful regions, Fricke has focused on making low intervention, pure expressions of dry riesling that capture the terroir of her adopted home. After working in vineyards across the globe, Fricke started making wine in 2006 as a side project and today makes over a dozen cuvees of both sparkling and still wine from grapes grown on 17 hectares with an emphasis on sustainability. Her Kiedrich Trocken is a village level wine, but drinks like a grand cru: aromas of salt and flint give way to a full-bodied, intense palate of stone fruit. Super distinct.

They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
