JouJou, Clos Bateau - 2021

Item # 45025 750 mL

A fruity, lithe, pure-berried wine made from Gamay vines planted in the pink soils of two vineyards near Lantignié in Beaujolais: Les Monthieux and Montmerand. Spritzy upon opening as the natural by-product of fermentation of carbon dioxide acts as a preservative. The fruit was hand-harvested and fermented (semi-carbonic maceration) and was only sulphured at bottling. Lively on the palate and a fine match with roasted salmon and garlic potatoes.

Staff Pick Notes

Sylvie and Thierry Klok-de Visser are new kids on the block in Beaujolais; they moved into their Lantignié domaine in 2019. To cultivate biodiversity in their vineyards, they planted over 100 fruit and nut trees throughout their 8 hectares of land. They also have herbs growing amongst the vines, which their sheep (who are valued members of their team) graze on throughout the winter, helping to fertilize the soil. Joujou, which means "toy" in French, is a wine to have fun with. It's youthful, exuberant, and beguiling. Blood orange and ruby grapefruit dominate the scene, rather than the cherries and raspberries we expect from Gamay. Savory and herbal tones meld with the tart and slightly bitter fruit. This wine is pure jewel-toned joy.

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is the classic expression of the Gamay grape. These red wines (labeled simply “Beaujolais”) are approachable, grapey, and fun – ideal for low-pressure sipping. Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
