Staff Pick Notes

There are a few qualities I look for when selecting Champagne: a bit of age, some oxidative nuttiness, and great value. With one of these, I'm happy. Two, thrilled. But all three? I'm shouting from the rooftops! So heed my call and check out this incredible Champagne from the estate of Jean Velut. We're looking at 100% Chardonnay from vines planted in the early 1970s, aged 10 years on the lees before disgorgement. Oxidative in style, this gives rich, yeasty notes of toasted almonds, but is still deliciously fresh and vibrant on the palate, its minerally core still intact thanks to a tiny dosage. The Velut family was among the first to recognize the potential of the steep, chalky slopes of Montgueux in the Aube, and thank goodness for that. This is an all-rounder Champagne if I've ever seen one - as in I want to drink it all year round!

It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
