Le 249 présente Minouche, Julie Balagny - 2020

750 mL
Item # 44827

Julie Balagny landed in the village of Fleurie in 2009. With a few hectares of Gamay vines that are flanked by the woods and prairies, her approach is more natural. This comes from two parcels, one from St. Amour, the other from Beaujolais-Villages. Semi-carbonic fermentation and then aging in old barrels. Pair with braised chicken.

Staff Pick Notes

Typically, the crus of Beaujolais are a good indicator to the style of wine one can expect, but bucking that trend seems to be Julie Balagny's mantra. Despite believing in the AOC system, she goes about declassifying some of her wines as VdFs. She owns a beautiful, isolated parcel in the heart of Fleurie (along with some Moulin-à-Vent) and goes about vinification the same way with all her wines: semi-carbonic maceration in concrete vats, slow and gentle manual press, elevage in neutral oak, and no added sulfur. This 2019 declassified Fleurie is an exuberant expression of the cru, full of prickly raspberry bramble, apple core, sour cherry, licorice, and smoky minerality. There is a light barnyard funk that supports the vivacious fruit, plus acid that’s not too high, which cleanses the palate well.

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is the classic expression of the Gamay grape. These red wines (labeled simply “Beaujolais”) are approachable, grapey, and fun – ideal for low-pressure sipping. Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
