Stauning Rye Whisky

Item # 44675 750 mL

We can't help but get excited when an artisan distiller takes something so seemingly simple, like a two-grain mashbill, and turns it into a completely fresh and new style of whisky. Made from 70% local malted rye and 30% malted barley that is double pot distilled prior to aging, the whisky has a mature grain forward profile that inverts the traditional relationship of new make to wood to striking affect.

Staff Pick Notes

Two things I lean toward in the whisky category: pot distillation and a rye-dominant mashbill. I dig the bold and spicy nature of the grain. Pot distillation typically occurs in smaller batches and results in a cleaner spirit at the end of the run. Stauning, a distillery located on the west coast of Denmark, uses locally sourced grain and direct-fired pot stills to create a flavorful dram that should pique the interest of any rye enthusiast. They even do their own floor malting of grain--a tradition seen rarely these days, even in Scotland. The combo of rye and barley offers a dram that is dark and fruity at once. Uniquely Danish, with minor variations in each batch to maintain its distinctive nature. Add this one to your short list.
