Sono, Montenidoli - 2017

Item # 44652 750mL

The most structured and long-lived of Elisabetta Fagiuloi's Sangiovese, this wine is aged in barriques for 2 years. Bottle aged for 3 years, this is a young version of what this wine could become in the future. Approachable now, it has much to offer in its youth. Dark fruit, spice, firm tannins, and earth aromas all pair well with braised beef.

Staff Pick Notes

Elisabetta Fagiuoli is a wine pioneer. As soon as she purchased the Montenidoli Estate in 1965, she implemented organic farming principles and practices. She was ridiculed by Italian wine society as female winemakers were scarce and organic agriculture was non-existent. She was never deterred as she knew that being true to her terroir would make great wine. Sono Montenidoli is Elisabetta’s top label amongst her 11 cuvées. It is 100% Sangiovese that has grown on iron-rich clay soils at 1100 ft altitude. The wine’s been aged in used barriques for 2 years, then aged in bottle for 3. The wine is intense and complex. It smells of poached red berries, violets, and a dusting of cocoa. The palate has a silky texture with weight, density and fine tannins. This vintage is showing its graceful age but will improve for the next 5 years.

Sangiovese

Italy's most planted grape variety is at the heart of some of the most beloved wines in the country. Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent complement to Cabernet Sauvignon in red Italian blends; this grape duo forms the basis of many of the...

Tuscany

When you think of Tuscan wine, think of Sangiovese, the grape that is common to most great Tuscan reds (Vernaccia is the only white wine made here). Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most complex expressions of Sangiovese, has the best aging potential. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows the softer side of the grape, containing up to 20% of other varieties. Young Chianti often smells of fresh fruit and herbs, while Chianti Classico Riserva can be dark and brooding. The term “Super Tuscans”...
