Staff Pick Notes

A remarkable Loire Chenin Blanc with enough nuance and character to distinguish it from its cousins in the region. Les Maisons Rouges was founded by Benoit and Elisabeth Jardin in the appellation of Jasnières at Loire's northern edge. Their approach to winemaking was pragmatic from the start as they chose this land for its excellent quality soil, cool conditions, and native grapes. The vines had high potential for wine production and their initial investment has paid off nicely. The majority of their production goes into white wines, but they also make reds from Pineau d’Aunis. "Dans les Perrons" comes from 4 plots in the Coteaux du Loir. Its elegance is immediately accessible and flows generously. Flavors of yellow plums, lavender, and honeycomb abound on the palate. It's a dry wine that hints at sweetness in each sip.

As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
