Taking the classic Kentucky mash for a rye of high-corn/high-barley and in this case higher proof (94) the finished whiskey expresses smoky flavors, preserved cherries, mocha, graphite and whole spices.

Staff Pick Notes

Rye is a whiskey that’s hard to tame. As a crop it grows, like a weed, without abandon. Even its flavors and style can easily get too rambunctious. So I was reluctant to taste Elijah Craig’s first crack at it. I was expecting something heavy handed but happily found something more nuanced. The aroma and first sip offer initial notes of dry spices foiled by subtle sweetness and toasted oak. The mid-palate smacks of dried cherries and wafts of wood smoke. Finishing with oily cracked pepper, graphite, and allspice. This whiskey offers plenty but never too much.
