Anjou Blanc "L'Ame de Fond", Le Fief Noir - 2021

Item # 43929 750 mL

One of the great, luscious dry Chenin Blancs you must try. This wine is pure joy, fresh, intense and full of character. We think a lot of this is attributed to the 45 year old vines planted in schist soils. Hand-harvested, pressed whole cluster and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Aged mostly in older barrels.

Staff Pick Notes

Old-vine Chenin Blanc is always something spectacular. In the region of Anjou known as Anjou Noir, the schist soils combine with fissures in the rock base to provide ample space for deep roots to take hold. The 45 year plus age of these durable vines shines through in the wine. The richness and clarity of flavor are opulent yet have a restrained mineral character. There is a first pass before the grapes are hand picked to filter out any botrytized grape, resulting in very ripe yet clean aromas. Honeyed peaches, ginger powder, white pepper, and lovely wet stones are a definite match for many fish, pork, or poultry dishes. Chicken tagine with preserved lemons and green olives would be stunning!

Glossary

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Anjou

At the far western end of the Loire Valley lies the town of Angers, for which the region of Anjou is named. The wines of this region enjoyed great fame throughout the 12th and 13th centuries, when wine production was dominated by the white varietals Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Then, when phylloxera wiped out most of these plantings, the area was replanted with a large proportion of Cabernet Franc, as well as smaller plots of Grolleau, Cabernet Sauvignon and Gamay. Today, Anjou is most famous...

Chenin Blanc

A versatile grape that is grown worldwide, but is most commonly associated with the Loire, California, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
