With the climate north of the Margaret River township being ideal for producing a Rhone style red, Ashbrook planted Shiraz in 1998. They consistently turn out this great value Shiraz with all the classic red fruits notes and structured tannins. The wine is matured in 100% French oak barriques (26% new) for 2 years, then further stored in bottle for 18 months before release.

Margaret River, south of Perth on the remote west coast of Australia, is such a fascinating wine region and - for reasons I wish I could better understand or explain – French oak is an especially magically partner for these wines from near the shores of the Indian Ocean. No surprise then that it is renowned for its Cabs and Chardonnays. Generally I am highly skeptical about using any new barriques with Syrah but this gorgeously scented and well balanced value shows what the new oak can contribute as part of a judicious barrel regime for Syrah from this region. I know, it’s labelled a Shiraz, but it’s so different than the jammy, 16% abv South Australia Shiraz you remember from the 90s that I feel like it should be called something else. It's a lovely, food-friendly wine that will likely surprise you.

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World.
