Casavecchia "Lautonis", Il Verro - 2019

Italy is a library of old, obscure grapes that are worth seeking out if you're looking to hit reset. Here is an intriguing wine made from the Casavecchia grape from a valley north of Naples and Caserta known as Alto Castertano. It's a place forgotten by time with rolling fertile land along the Volturno river surround by three national parks. It has no DOC or classification. The wines are humbly labeled 'Terre del Volturno.' Long story short it's an area of lost treasures. Il Verro -named after the native boar that roam the land- makes excellent wines unique to this area. This Casavecchia greets you with floral aromas of iris, geranium, and pine as well as herbal notes. The palate is lush with dusty, dark berries, red licorice, eucalyptus, black ash, textured with soft tannins. A rare treat all around.
