The Coal River Valley of southern Tasmania is a new frontier for cool climate wines, and Nocton vineyard is one of the larger estates in this emerging region. Their history may not be long, the first vines were planted in 1973, but it's exciting to see how much they've already done. This wine is from Pinot Noir vines planted in layers of Triassic sandstone and dolerite soil. The vines are cultivated in the green, fertile Coal River Valley with hills to the north and south protecting it from strong weather conditions. The temperatures are mild and the sunlight hours are long in the growing season. All of this is what Nocton refer to as "wine making nirvana." What you'll taste is an incredibly focused wine with a palate of tart, dark cherries, dried leaves and herbs, and an earthy finish. A quiet wine that has something to say.
