Staff Pick Notes

Farem Tot Petar is Occitan for "Let's blow everything up", which makes it my official motto for 2020. This naturally sparkling rosé wine (pétillant naturel, or pét-nat) is made with 100% biodynamically farmed Syrah grapes, with very little intervention in the cellar. Whereas many pét-nats are often cloudy due to the spent yeast still in the bottle, the folks at Domaine des Amiels choose to hand disgorge in order to clarify the wine. It bursts with tart red fruits: candied cranberry and freeze dried strawberry. The mid palate welcomes wonderful watermelon flesh and rind. It is zingy, fresh, with fine bubbles and just a hint of tannin. Enjoy as an apéritif, after dinner, or any other time of day.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce.
