I’ve been exploring Portugal lately as a wine-growing region worthy of recognition for their dry wines, not just their famous fortified ones. Slowly, I’ve been going down this aisle looking for that Goldilocks wine, a wine that hits that sweet spot between price and quality. Quinta da Mariposa Tinto, a red blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinto Roriz (Tempranillo), and Jaen (Mencia), is a vibrant, steel-fermented, un-oaked red that shows consistent characteristics of the Dao region. Ripe fruit notes of wild strawberries and bramble complement the rustic aromas of fresh juniper and warm stone. Fresh acidity and textured, fine-grained tannins balance out this fruit-driven wine. Some other wines might be hot right now, some others have chilled out, but this bottle is just right for me.
