Tarlant "La Vigne d'Or" Brut Nature - 2006

A blanc des noirs from a single parcel called "Pierre de Bellevue", planted in 1947 in Oeuilly by the Tarlants' paternal grandfather. This is 100% Pinot Meunier. The fruit was hand-harvested and the juice was fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel vats. The wine was aged in barrel with no malolactic fermentation before bottling in May 2005. The bottles were aged sur lattes, hand-riddled, disgorged in August 2016 and finished with no dosage.

Staff Pick Notes

Brut Nature has become somewhat of a thing in recent years, and while I'm usually wary of trends, this one in particular was baffling. Many of the Brut Nature I tasted were so austere as to be devoid of any pleasure. Then along comes Tarlant, the original rebel against the big houses and a pioneer of grower Champagne from back in the early 1900s. Only a winemaker with generations of knowledge could know how this wine would evolve and therefore what it would need (or not need) in its crafting. It's 100% Pinot Meunier that sees no malolactic fermentation and no dosage. Austere? Not in the least. It's rich and honeyed with toasty brioche and green apple. Beautifully balanced, as they intended.
