Vergnon, MSNL Chétillons et Mussetts, Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, Extra Brut - 2012

Item # 41510 750 mL

The Vergnon estate was founded in 1950. Their style is exquisite: pure, mineral-driven and fresh, as the Champagnes are made without malo and a low dosage. This comes from 50 year old vines giving density of fruit on the palate. It comes from two plots in Mesnil-sur-Oger: Chétillons and Mussetts. The wine aged 84 months on the lees before disgorging.

Staff Pick Notes

Sometimes working in the wine industry has it's benefits... This is a wine that I would almost never have access to unless I work at Astor Wines. Who else has the gall to bring in a Champagne with 84 months of lees age under the $200 price mark? This wine has so much body that it tastes like it undergoes malolactic conversion but it doesn't, all of the creaminess is coming from the age and care of this wine. Full and rich with a stunning golden color, mineral notes for days, and a lively green apple note that left me salivating for more. This wine begs to be served with fried chicken, and romantic company.

Champagne

Champagne is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a brilliant food wine. For consistency and quality, turn to the big Champagne brands and you’ll never go wrong. Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
