Bodegas Coviñas, "Auténtico" Bobal - 2018

Item # 40052 750mL

This red wine comes from a selection from plots of 50+ year old Bobal vines. Flavors of wild strawberry and currant abound. The wine spends 3-6 months in old barrel. While nearly forgotten now, Utiel Requeña wine region was crowned one of Spain’s first DOs in the 1930s. The harsh, arid climate with high altitude vineyards makes organic farming easy as it keeps disease pressure low.

Staff Pick Notes

If you've ever been of the belief that it's impossible to find a great bottle of wine under $15, this wine is here to rock your world. Made from Bobal, a native Spanish variety, this incredibly delicious and surprisingly wine displays fresh fruit flavors of strawberry and raspberry, along with dried herb notes of lavender. Grape growers in this region belong to a Burgundy-esque union which encourages and incentivizes quality farming practices. The wine displays considerable elegance and restraint, a rare find in this hot climate of central Spain. If you're really feeling like delving into the flavors of the region, enjoy this wine with game bird and wild boar. Or, if pizza and burgers if you're having more of a New York evening.

Bobal

A red Spanish grape variety that is grown throughout much of Spain, and often used in blended bulk wines. Recent varietal bottlings have given Bobal a better image: the velvety wines it produces have better acidity than that other Spanish favorite, Monastrell.
