Staff Pick Notes

When I initially began studying wines, I loved Sauvignon Blanc for its easily recognizable (and sometimes in-your-face) qualities. I could assuredly identify it in a blind tasting, which made me feel like I really knew something about the wine world, although I still had SO MUCH to learn. Over time I found that Sauvignon Blanc's bolder characteristics can be polarizing. This is a "love it or hate it" kind of grape. I moved away from loving it, in part because I drank so much of it, but also because there are so many other grapes to learn about and appreciate. Many people associate the grape with New Zealand, but this Aussie version is quite refreshing and well balanced, without the intense herbal and citrus notes and high acidity that marks the NZ style. Pair it with crab dip and crudité for a culinary win.

Glossary

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...

Australia

Australian Shiraz (made from the grape called “Syrah” in other parts of the world) shows the essence of the outback: it’s big, bold, and a little rough around the edges. The vast country leaves lots of room for variation, however, with its many terroirs each yielding distinctively styled wines. The climate of South Australia’s McLaren Vale district is heavily influenced by the ocean; wines here typically show savory notes of olive and spice on the nose and deep berry flavors on the palate....

Victoria

The state of Victoria, adjacent to and southeast of South Australia, is Australia’s third-largest producer of wine. Climatically very varied (its higher-altitude vineyards are the coolest in Australia), Victoria is home to the most diverse assortment of vineyards in Australia, with a particular focus on cooler-climate varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Shiraz production tends to be concentrated in the central viticultural regions of Grampians, Pyrenees, and Heathcote, where the...
