Staff Pick Notes

In the glass, a dark mauve core with a neon purple rim. Opening aromatics are immediately gorgeous: ripe pluot, carne asada, new boots, lilacs, espresso bean and wet concrete. On the palate, layers upon layers reveal themselves, from plum galette to dark chocolate to barbequed tri-tip and sweet oak. Puckering tannins to finish, the wine closes on a high note with a touch of blood orange zest and lingering acidity. This is a powerful (15.7% ABV) wine of incredible intensity for big boys and girls, deserving of a good decant, big glasses and serious protein. At Orin Swift “Blending trials for Machete are amongst the favorite for each vintage, leaving everyone with purple teeth and a puckered palate. After various blend iterations, the 2020 Machete is true to the style of being approachable for the highly tannic and visceral varietal”.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
