Pouilly-Loché En Chantone, Clos des Rocs - 2022

750 mL
Item # 37645

From a small .65 ha site found just 100 meters from the Clos des Rocs Monopole, this site has a beneficial poor top layer of soil meaning the vines suffer more than neighboring plots. This results in small, concentrated grapes. The ancient 90 year-old vines also contribute to the low yields which collectively adds to the body of this white Burgundy.

Staff Pick Notes

Never heard of Pouilly-Loché? This tiny Maconnais appellation may lack the visibility of its more famous neighbor Pouilly-Fuissé, but its under-the-radar status means there are real values to be found. It comprises a mere 32 hectares surrounding the small village of Loché, all of which are Chardonnay. The soils are iron-rich clay and limestone producing wines that are leaner than in Pouilly-Fuissé but still quite rich and minerally. Six of those hectares belong to Clos des Rocs, founded in 2002 by Olivier Giroux. He farms biodynamically and uses native yeasts, wanting the terroir to shine. This comes from a small parcel of 90-year-old vines yielding a concentrated, dense wine with ripe apple, citrus, toasted almonds and wet stone. Rich yet fresh, generous yet focused, it's a wine that could easily pass for a bottle at twice the price.

More About This Wine

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
