Staff Pick Notes

Tenuta di Fiorano is unique winery in many senses. Owned by a royal lineage (there are several popes in the family tree over the centuries) they produce unconventional wines on an estate a few kilometers south of Rome. The estate was maintained for most of the twentieth century by the late Prince Alberico Boncompagna Ludovisi, a pioneer winemaker planting non-Italian varietals before the rise of Super Tuscans. Now his nephew Prince Alessandrojacopo is in charge and experimenting with new grapes. This white wine is part of the current regeneration. A blend of Grechetto and Viognier grown in volcanic subsoil, matured in oak and chestnut. The result is a delight. Superb minerality, herbs and flowers with a rich honeyed texture. The wines of Lazio are relatively unknown from the outside so half the pleasure is in the discovery itself.
