Gut Oggau "Atanasius" - 2023

Item # 37133 750 mL

Decant as the residual CO2 acts as a preservative to this gorgeous red wine. This project was started in 2007 by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe. They see a unique personality in each wine and thus crafted detailed labels for each one. This lively red wine is a blend of Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, made without fining, filtration, or added sulfur.

Staff Pick Notes

It’s hard for eyes not to be drawn to the black and white drawings of the faces on the labels of Gut Oggau’s wines. Each face is of a member of 3 generations of a fictional family. Each member shows a personality that personifies each wine. Atanasius is one of the three grandchildren. The wine is youthfully exuberant with a lively palate shouting dark fruit, savory herbs, and earthy minerality. The estate is biodynamically farmed and the wine is vinified with no intervention. As with purely natural wines, a little volatility may occur. The great ones will retain their focus and clarity. My bottle was blessed with a bit of second fermentation that gave the juice a delightful fizz. It was like Lambrusco encountered a divine force and became a great wine!

Offering some of the best attributes of both its parents, Zweigelt is very resistant to frost (an important trait to have when growing in chilly Austria) and ripens relatively early. It combines the...
