Sylvaner, Muri Gries - 2023

Item # 37009 750 mL

Muri-Gries remains a working Benedictine monastery, which was originally built in the late eleventh century as a fortress. Today, the monks maintain the vineyards. This delicious white wine is full of peach and golden apple flavors with chappy minerality. A fine match for grilled vegetables lightly dressed in herbs and olive oil.

Staff Pick Notes

When it comes to white wines, I gravitate toward bright and fresh, higher acid wines from cooler climates, and am a big fan of wines from Alto-Adige. This northern Italian region on the border of Austria is most famous for crisp, mineral driven (dry) whites and there is a rich wine making history at Muri Gries dating back nearly 200 years. In 1845, Benedictine monks moved from Muri in Switzerland to Gries in South Tyrol and took over the Augustine monastery that was built as a fortress in the 11th century and have been hard at work in the vineyards and cellar ever since. They refer to the Silvaner as "the lively one" and it lives up to the name. It's bright and fresh with hints of peach, golden apple and a delicate floral bouquet. This racey white will refresh your palate and will compliment most anything on the menu.

Trentino-Alto Adige

Crossing the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, Trentino-Alto-Adige is in fact comprised of two autonomous regions (Trentino and Alto-Adige). The swath of land was returned to Italy after World War I, and the two regions have been lumped together in the winemaking world ever since. Alto-Adige, the northernmost half of the region, retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. The region is most famous for its...

Alto Adige

Comprising the northern half of the oft-conjoined Trentino/Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy, Alto-Adige is in fact its own entity with its own distinct style of winemaking. Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. Alto-Adige is most...
