Te Mata "Bullnose" Syrah - 2020

Item # 35387 750 mL

When the family operation took over Te Mata winery in 1974, they replanted Syrah vines that are now some of the oldest on the island. This Syrah expresses a violet aroma, with rich, spiced fruit and fine grained tannins. A superb match with grilled fare.

Staff Pick Notes

Established in 1896, Te Mata Estate remains family owned, producing internationally recognized wines exclusively from its Hawke’s Bay vineyards, and to many they’re considered to be New Zealand’s greatest winery, some would even say New Zealand’s First Growth. This wine is another stunning example from this label, sourced from the oldest Syrah vines in Hawke’s Bay. A complex bouquet of black plum, brambly fruits, violets, and toasted almond get us very excited for a refined yet undeniably powerful palate that continues to develop these flavors, and gives us fresh dark fruit, black tea, cola and exotic spices, framed by delicious acidity and polished, silky tannins. I simply had to pair with heavily-rosemaried lamb chops (this is New Zealand after all), potato croquette, and a balsamic-roasted black grape compote.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...

New Zealand

Over the past two decades, this tiny island nation has demonstrated that its winemaking ability extends well beyond excellent Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir has found an ideal climate here, as have Riesling and Chardonnay. The relatively cool weather of the South Island (and the southern regions of the North Island) provides the climate that these grapes require in order to develop the right acidity levels. Modern New Zealand wines have incredible depth and all the complexity of their Old World...
