Staff Pick Notes

Jean-Marie Chaland is one of the premier producers of Chardonnay in the Macon. Owner of two estates in the denominated town of Viré. Maintained with organic viniculture and using only native yeast during fermentation, the experience of these balance wines is quintessential Bourgonge. The "la Perriere" from his Sainte Barbe estate is made from 35 year-old vines on a 1.5 acre parcel of clay/limestone soil that has never been treated with herbicide. The grapes are hand-harvested and aged for 18 months in a combination of steel and oak. The result is a Chardonnay deeply balanced in fruit between overripe apple and Meyer lemon. The combination of mineral rich soil and maturation gives this glass a wonderful backbone. A reassuringly fresh example of White Burgundy that is perfect for an elegant fish entree or an evening sip on the couch.

It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
