Clendenen Family Vineyards "The Pip" Pinot Noir - 2019

750 mL
Item # 35220

A gorgeous Pinot Noir from Santa Maria Valley. Notes of red cherry and a luscious feel on the palate, yet quite pale in color. Only neutral barrels are used for aging, allowing the fruit to really shine through. The Pip was made in honor of winemaker Jim Clendenen's beloved Border Collie, Pip.

Staff Pick Notes

A shining example of 'New World style' showing off it's potential. Jim Clendenen (the force behind the esteemed wines of Au Bon Climat) somehow finds the free time for his personal passion projects like 'The Pip.' I found it to be that unique place where force meets finesse. The wine was crafted specifically to exhibit the fruit, revealing delicate cherry, anise, red currant and plum. A touch of vanilla from minimal new oak contact adds a rich, decadent component, but the underlying earthy notes and just enough tannin keep the party from getting too wild. The result for me was more balanced than I expected, and I eagerly kept going back to the glass. The wine is named for Clendenen's dog, and this Pip might just win Best in Show!

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
