Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett, Dönnhoff - 2023

Item # 34378 750 mL

Off-dry Riesling with intense minerals on the palate. Layered and complex with flavors of Meyer lemon, lime, white cracked pepper, blue flowers, and a hint of waxy. Racy acidity and minerality demand food pairing with fresh and clean food such as fish tartar and/or farm vegetable salads with vinaigrette.

Staff Pick Notes

I’m a romantic but I’ve never been seduced by flowery winemaking stories. If the wine is really that good it doesn’t need a vignette to be poured in my glass. Though today many wines are slung at me strewn with lofty tales. This Kabinett from Dönnhoff while quiet does seem to bend my ear (and more importantly my elbow). Rich citrus flavors, savory spices, and a layered texture that is aching to be molded by a few years of time. The wine quivers with energy and begs a certain understanding. Wines don’t need a song and dance. Let them speak for themselves.

Helmut Dönnhoff has been making the wine since 1971, and now his son Cornelius...

Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
