Ottin farms four hectares of vineyards on the hills overlooking the town of Aosta in the villages of Saint Christophe and Quart, with south-facing exposure. The dry climate of the valley and particularly of Aosta, an area subject to drought, is ideal for guaranteeing a perfect ripening of the grapes as well as favoring the health of the grapes and the balance of all the components in the wine.

Italy is a treasure trove of grape varietals, with an estimated 2,000 native grapes in its very large chest. Many of these varietals are very rarely seen, and many on the cusp of extinction. This is one of the reasons I am personally against planting international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon in this hotbed of vinous flora. That being said, I will now recommend to you an Italian Pinot Noir! The Val D'Aosta is a primarily francophone region of Italy that has much to do with neighboring Switzerland and France, often more so than the rest of the country. Domaine Ottin's Pinot Noir grows splendidly on the dry valley slopes of Aosta. A southern exposure allows for ample ripening at such a high altitude, and this wine has been singing over the past three days at my apartment. Cherries, almonds, and earth!
