Vouvray "Le Haut Lieu" Sec, Huet - 2023

Item # 33171 750 mL

Stretching over nine hectares, Le Haut-Lieu provides extremely deep limestone and brown clay soils. The heavy soils result in richer and rounder character in this wine. This is a very expressive Chenin Blanc with orange blossom, honeysuckle, and apple. Mouthwatering, juicy finish.

Staff Pick Notes

Through four generations, Domaine Huet has been on the top of the heap of Chenin grower-producers. They work three Grand Cru vineyards and have helped elevate the Vouvray region. Haut-Lieu is the vineyard which Victor Huet founded the winery with in 1928. What is great about Huet is their approach of allowing nature determine what types of wines they will make. They will focus on sweet and demi sec during riper years and produce more dry wines in cooler years. I had the pleasure of opening a six-year-old bottle of Haut-Lieu sec and I was flabbergasted. The wine was profound with a multitude of flavors and aromas. Some honey, some smoke, some camomille, and all types of ripe fruit (pineapple, melon, apple, lime), paraffin, yeast. All of these notes reveal themselves at various moment. Try with chicken curry.

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Chenin Blanc

A versatile grape that is grown worldwide, but is most commonly associated with the Loire, California, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
